Info
Three main principles serve as foundation for the existence of Rafskinna, first published june 30th 2007 after one year of preperation. Firstly this DVD Magazine should serve as medium for visual arts and other visual material in Iceland. Secondly it should encourage the producing of such material and thirdly it should introduce artists, musicians, designers, architects, poets, novelists and other creative human beings, Icelandic or not, old and new, man and women, in or out of Iceland. Therefor it is bilingual, Icelandic and English.
It’s influence can be found in similar non-icelandic publications of recorded material on DVD disc dealing with and showing video-related artwork. Still Rafskinna stands out by dealing with a wide range of artistic output. Instead of focusing only on, say, short-films or music videos, Rafskinna embraces the term moving images besides giving room on it’s printed sheet for text, photographs and drawings. A unifier for all the publications is the material found inside the Magazine which has until said publication not been accessible, not previewed for a long time, hard to find or only available through the Internet in a non-satisfactory manner quality-wise. In addition to publishing and distributing these hard-to-find gems Rafskinna produces and has produced for each issue new, exciting, exclusive works of documentaries, interviews, music vidoes etc. Still the old has it’s seat in Rafskinna who’s fully aware of the fact that nothing comes of nothing. So, in each issue we bring you old rarities which fulfill something of the following:
1. Was a hit back in the days, but today is lost on most people.
2. Has something to say to modern viewers.
3. Is interesting but unavailable
4. Has for some reason not gotten the attentioin Rafskinna feels it should have.
Packing and mailboxes
To further widen the gap between material distributed digitally by means of the Internet, Publishers of Rafskinna go to great lenghts in marerializing each issue, designing a fresh and artistic packaging. New designer is hired for each issue of Rafskinna which hits the stores 3 times a year. DVD disc, poster, printed material and various additions to each issue is wrapped in a folder measuring 20 x 270 x 270 millimeters. This gives designers a lot of space for their work withe the downside being on the receiving end; standard mailboxes measure in at a itty-bitty 25 x 260 millimeters which means Subscribers and those who order Rafskinna through this homepage must, with a glee of excitement, sprint down to the post-office and fetch their over-sized work of unparallelled beauty. Rafskinna: hand-made by us, hand-picked by you.
Electronic Pergament
The name Rafskinna is taken form an old advertising agency which was up and running in the fifties through the seventies. An electronic billboard from this acency, placed in the centrum, also carried the name Rafskinna. There you could expect to find the latest and the best in advertisements of this era. Raf means electronic and skinna pergament.
